The European Artificial Intelligence Board (AI Board) held its 9th meeting in Brussels on 17 September. Greece is represented on the Board by the Special Secretariat for Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
The AI Board coordinates cooperation among EU Member States to ensure the consistent implementation and application of the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) across the Union. It supports coordination among the national competent authorities responsible for enforcing the Regulation and facilitates the exchange of technical and regulatory expertise and best practices.
A key responsibility of the Board is to advise and assist on the implementation of the AI Act, including on guidelines, delegated acts and implementing acts. The Board also plays a broader role in shaping AI policy across the EU, advising on innovation policy, international partnerships and other strategic matters related to artificial intelligence.
At the 9th meeting, the Board’s subgroups presented the results of their work. Discussions covered, among other topics, progress in implementing the Regulation across the Member States, national measures on AI literacy, the transparency obligations under Article 50, and the next phase of the Member States’ joint efforts in the current international and geopolitical context.
The Special Secretariat was represented by Mr Georgios Kanellos, Chief of Staff to the Special Secretary. On the margins of the meeting, he held talks with the European Commission and Member State delegations, including exchanges in preparation for Greece’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2027. He met with Ms Despina Spanou, Deputy Director-General of DG CONNECT; officials from the AI Office; the Cypriot delegation, represented by Mr Stavros Tsiakkouris and Mr Marios Ioannidis; and the delegations of Ireland, which currently holds the Presidency, and Italy, which will hold it in the first half of 2028, immediately after Greece.
