On the occasion of the European Day of Languages and International Translation Day, the European Commission is organising an online event on Wednesday, 30 September 2026 (12:00–16:30 CEST) under the theme “Languages Unite Us!”
The event highlights the importance of linguistic diversity in education and society and explores how languages and new technologies can contribute to communication, inclusion and the creation of new opportunities in the digital age.
Thematic Session: “Language matters in AI: how languages shape AI – and how AI shapes languages”
A key thematic session of this year’s event will explore the two-way relationship between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and linguistic diversity: “Language matters in AI: how languages shape AI – and how AI shapes languages.”
The session will examine:
- How languages shape the AI technologies we use every day and how AI systems are trained in different languages.
- Why some languages have a greater influence on AI and what happens to languages that are underrepresented; and
- Through real-life examples, how AI initially struggles with a language and gradually learns it, producing results that are sometimes amusing and at other times thought-provoking.
Parallel Themes & Digital Exhibition Area
The event will also feature a round-table discussion on linguistic inclusion in education and democratic participation, as well as a session focusing on best practices in the language services industry.
In parallel, from 25 September to 2 October, registered participants will have access to the virtual exhibition area, where they can navigate the space using their avatar and discover the different ways in which the European Commission supports multilingualism, language learning and linguistic diversity.
