Glossary

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

A field of computer science focusing on the development of computing systems capable of performing complex tasks that we typically consider requiring intelligence, such as analyzing complex information and drawing conclusions, driving cars, understanding and generating text, images, etc.

Data

Elements of information (such as texts, numbers, images, audio) that are collected, stored, and processed by computing systems. They constitute the raw material for training AI systems.

Training

The process by which an AI system is fed data (examples) and adjusts its parameters so that it can recognize patterns or achieve specific goals (e.g., the accurate recognition of objects in an image).

Neural Network

Neural Network

A type of AI system that is inspired by how the brains of humans (and animals) are organized, though it does not operate in the exact same way.

Large Language Model (LLM)

AI systems that have been “trained” on very large quantities of text. Their operation is based, to a large extent, on predicting the most probable next word, which allows them to generate coherent text, summarize, translate, and answer queries.

Prompt

The set of instructions provided by the user to an LLM to request it to perform a specific task. The clarity of the prompt largely determines the quality of the output.

Bias

The tendency of an AI system to systematically reproduce prejudices, stereotypes, or unequal representations present in the data on which it was trained. This may lead to unbalanced or unfair outputs.
